Meet the Makers
Urban Crafters offers the best from crafters and makers from the South of New Zealand. Of course we'd love to see you buying directly from our shop, but we also want to encourage and support our makers too - so for this reason we have included links to our individual crafters. If you have any special requests or want to know about their process in depth, you can contact them directly.
Note: If their named link goes nowhere it means they don't have an online presence and can be contacted through the shop,
Stitch and Knit Crafts
I have always enjoyed knitting starting at a very early age, then later learning to sew.
Making items for family and friends started me on the path to eventually selling them at markets - Wheat Bags, Baby wear, Dolls Clothes, Peg Aprons, Finger Puppets.
It’s wonderful to know that some items have travelled many kilometres from where they were made, here in Dunedin.
The Wright Bear
A year ago I started making bears again after a break of 20 years. This time I'm making small bears - up to 20cm tall.
Each one is handmade from my own patterns using mohair or vintage materials. I have also used the streets in Dunedin to help me choose their names.
I love making these wee bears and finding their special look and character. I have used tiny buttons and beads to make these bears so they are not suitable for children.
Nana Glamour is all about handcrafted gifts with a vintage flavour. Notebooks made from 1950’s fashion images, needle cases utilising old playing cards, tissue box covers with pinups and beautiful little boxes repurposed from tatty books, wallpaper and charming ephemera.
Choose from a handmade Christmas decoration, a movie star bookmark or little gift tags and fridge magnets all with an element of vintage appeal.
Rona enjoys creating items with fibre, any fibre, but mostly natural fibre. Some items even include fleece from her own sheep.

With her skill set including felting, weaving, sewing there is sure to be something to appeal...

Southern Lights Candles

re-usable glass jars.

A couple of years ago a friend introduced me to Taieri Spinners and Weavers’ group where I have met wonderful creative people and was introduced to needle felting. Despite stabbing myself, lots! I quickly became addicted to sculpting all sorts
of strange and wonderful creatures from bundles of fluffy wool.
I now felt to order and teach needle felting.
I am a Japanese born kiwi - I have lived in New Zealand for over 20 years and have recently relocated, with my family, south to Dunedin. I've done markets up North since 2011 selling my handmade Japanese

My products are very unique and one off, and I use my own imported quality Japanese fabrics and clasps, and all products are original and
handmade. I have a range of fabrics, and styles from Japan and I am happy to make one off items at request.
My life to the present has been about going back to basics, using what is available and not wasting, - reusing, repurposing and recycling.
I have gone through the cycles of the ‘current craft trends’ learning new skills along the way, which has lead me to the latest venture, putting various skills together and repurposing our beautiful wool blankets.

I love letting old English china live on in my hearts, crosses and mirrors, and where possible I try to incorporate a piece of vintage jewellery. Lately I've been working with glass, mirror and paua, bringing in more Kiwiana designs.
I'm based in Dunedin and am very fortunate to have my own home studio, my "happy place".
